Sheep
We breed and raise Katahdin sheep, a unique and hardy meat
breed, here at the farm. The Katahdin is a "haired" sheep rather
than a "wool" sheep which makes it well acclimated to Mississippi's
hot and humid weather. Because it has no wool, shearing the sheep is
not necessary as they have a naturally short-haired coat. In the
winter their hair thickens in response to the cold and they shed
their extra hair in the spring just as dogs, cats, and horses will.
We do not dock our sheep's
tails as their short
hair does not promote
|
| the health issues associated with the wool sheep breeds. Our sheep
are friendly, gentle and easy to handle and have continual access to
fresh pastures for most of the year. Only in the coldest months of
winter do we keep them close to the barn in order to ensure they
receive enough to eat and in order to give them access to the barn
during lambing season. Our sheep will be lambing from January to
April in the upcoming year. |
